What is a Bylaw?

Bylaws are general rules that govern affairs within municipalities. Councils can only act by resolution or bylaw.

All municipalities have bylaws in place to address a range of issues, such as community standards, traffic and parking, and land use. Local governments and bylaws in Alberta are governed by the Municipal Government Act (MGA).

Who does this impact?

YOU.

Bylaws aren't all bad. Some outline noise allowances, others address community standards.

Some bylaws have larger reaching impacts than others.

Land Use Bylaws govern and regulate how land can be used and developed within a municipality. All municipalities in Alberta (and mostly everywhere else, too) are required to have a Land Use Bylaw in effect.

What are Land Use Bylaws?

Land Use Bylaws set out guidelines and framework for how different land types can be used and developed.

Land types can include areas of land used for agricultural, residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional, but may also include other types of land uses as well.
